Bombed to smithereens in the war, this 18th Century architectural jewel by Friedrich Schinkel was fully restored in the 1980s. Sometimes referred to by its former name of Schauspielhaus am Gendarmenmarkt, this is the home of the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester and also often visited by the Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester. There are two halls: the large hall for symphony concerts and the small one for chamber concerts.

The home of the world-famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is a glorious piece of organic architecture designed by Hans Scharoun. The legendary accoustics are really only legendary in the more expensive seats i.e. in front of the orchestra. Concerts by the Berlin Phil are no longer booked-out months in advance as in the days of Herbert von Karajan, but it still pays to try and get tickets ahead of time.
