Prenzlauer Berg

A lively but civilized area, populated largely by students with cash and young professionals. Kastanienallee is the main street as far as nightlife goes in this area, sporting numerous newly refurbished cocktail bars with plush upholstery , bright neon lighting and fancy drinks, complete with paper brollies. The area's current popularity has led to many proprieters bumping up their prices, but it´s still the area where Berliners hang out when they want to spoil themselves.

Bastard Club @ Prater
Kastanienalle 7-9, 10435 Berlin - Prenzlauer Berg | Tel: 247 67 72, Fax: no fax | U+S Eberswalder Str. | Tickets: € 10 - 25.

Connected to the currently 'in' Prater beer garden, the Bastard club is a small and select club for the Berlin "scene" crowd. The music here is varied, and tends to lean towards experimental electronic, attracting train spotters and a "see and be seen" crowd. That said, the place does offer a certain intimacy due to the small space and a huddle of large, comfortable sofas. Worth a look as long as you know what you´re letting yourself in for music-wise, as the variety can be strangely diverse.

You didn´t take a wrong turn: the entrance to the Icon is tucked away in a small, decrepit automotive lot. The club is known for its underground shows: British label Ninja Tune has its own night here. Check this place out for the somewhat gritty ambience: a flight of stairs leads down to a dark, oblong room with a stage; a friendlier, glittery bar is in a side den. Feel anonymous under the high ceilings, feel tough as you lean against a pumping speaker. Watch for people crouched on the stairs, since the club attracts a fairly large crowd for concerts.
