The use of credit cards is not as widespread in Berlin as it is elsewhere, so it useful to have cash handy at all times. However, most ATMs (cash machines) do accept international cards such as Eurocard, Mastercard, American Express, Visa, Diners' Club International, Plus and Cirrus. Berlin's biggest banks are the Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Dresdner Bank, Berliner Sparkasse, and the Berliner Bank.

Most banks will issue you with an EC card, which will allow you to draw cash from machines and pay for purchases by direct debit. Some outlets have a machine into which you key in your PIN number. However, other high street stores will require that you show your ID (passport or driver's licence if you have no ID card) - so remember to take this with you if you're planning a shopping spree.
