Walking into Café Einstein on Kurfürstenstr. is like walking into Vienna. The mirrored walls, high ceilings, and red velvet banquettes all echo the grand old style of a traditional Viennese coffee house. So do the small but perfectly executed selection of cakes and the rich, mellow coffee. In summer, take a seat in the cool, quiet garden. They also have a lunch and diner menu in "International, Austrian Style" - try such classics as Wiener Schnitzel or Austrian Pancakes (Kaiser Schmarren). The second, more crowded, less opulent Mitte location also offers outdoor seating, if you fancy a table in the middle of busy Unter den Linden.

THE place to go if you want bagels in Berlin. They're baked fresh, on premises by a man who went all the way to New York to learn his craft. Delicious bagel sandwiches and a wide variety of flavored cream cheeses too. Note: with only one table to sit down at, the Joachimstaler Str. location is more of a take-out place.

map:
Sister to the larger and better known Opern cafe, The Wiener Cafe offers the same delicious cakes with faster, friendlier service in a more relaxed setting, just a block from the Grunewald Forest. Especially recommended is the small but sinful Mignon - delicate layers of shortbread sandwiched, and softened, between thin layers of buttercream, each bite melting with rich, buttery flavor. A second location, in the more centrally located Potsdamer Platz Arkaden makes it even easier to indulge.

Buchwald
Bartningallee 29, Berlin - Tiergarten | Tel: 391 59 31, Fax: no fax | S-Bahn Bellevue | Times: Mon - Sat 9:00 - 18:00, Sun 10:00 - 18:00

map:
A traditional German cafe established on the leafy edge of the Spree since 1852. Featuring a large and dainty sitting room positively packed on Sunday afternoons with seniors and their
kin. The coffee is a thin and watery complement to decadent lardy cream cakes. Famous for its overpriced if sublime Baumkuchen: an intricate pound cake with thin layers of apricot jam or marzipan.
